Our Chaplaincy Team Aims

Chaplaincy is a pastoral role within primary schools.

At Sacred Heart School this includes:

  • Being part of the school community.
  • Being a listening ear within the school community where children have a safe space to share their thoughts and concerns.
  • Supporting the school in its delivery of spirituality, worship and prayer with a particular emphasis on Christianity.
  • Enhancing the pastoral care structure of the school to enable it to meet the needs of its community.
  • Working in other areas of the school community as need and opportunity arises and as skills and expertise allow.
  • Offering opportunities to explore personal and Christian belief and values

Our Chaplaincy Team Activities

First Holy Communion 2017

The lessons for children intending to make their First Holy Communion this year began in January. Meetings take place most Monday evenings after school and are led by Mrs Taylor and Mrs James and Mrs Eyles  (both parishoners and volunteers from church.)

First Holy Communion Mass will take place on the Feast of Corpus Christi on 18th June 2017 at 9.00am.

Mini Vinnies

The Mini Vinnies were commissioned at our school mass in November 2016. This group of children are extremely active in their charity work throughout the school year.

Travelling cribs – The travelling cribs are always a huge success once and bring  much joy to many families in school.

October 2016 -  'Travelling Rosaries'.

December 2016 -  'Travelling Cribs'

March 2017 - 'Travelling Crosses'

May 2017 - Travelling Rosaries'

This success has been built on  by introducing travelling crosses during Lent and travelling rosaries during May and October. I trust this will be a welcome addition for our children and families.

Saint of the week assemblies are continuing on a Wednesday morning. These are led by children from the Liturgy group who group themselves accordingly to ensure they deliver an assembly at least every three to four weeks.  They have begun to plan these assemblies in greater detail and evaluate them afterwards. This, together with pictorial evidence, will create a substantial folder of evidence.

School Mass/Family Mass – As a school we attend Mass on the first Tuesday in every month. This provides us opportunities as a school to celebrate Mass together which is a vital part of being a school community. Father James comes into school once a month to celebrate our school mass.

Children from each class take it in turns to read, write bidding prayers and do the offertory procession. We value the opportunity to do this and welcome the positive comments from the congregation who always appear to enjoy the singing!

Family mass takes place on the first Sunday in every month – Classes continue to take turns to lead the congregation in readings, bidding prayers, offertory procession. We value the support of families and the congregation with this.

prayer gardenPrayer garden

The prayer garden was finished and blessed by Fr. James in November 2015. This is a valuable resource for the school. Children are enjoying sitting on the benches and praying quietly for their intentions. In the summer, the intention is that the garden becomes a location for class liturgies on a rota basis.

Strengthening the links between parish and school

In addition to the monthly visits to church on a Tuesday, Father James also visits the school once a month to celebrate  mass in school. Everyone is welcome and there will be an opportunity for confession after the Mass in school.
