Governors

At Sacred Heart RC Primary School, we welcome the involvement of parents and the community in supporting our pupils.

We have a Governing Body who help the Headteacher to develop the school and help its children to achieve their maximum potential.

The role of the governing body is:

1.Strategic; to set a broad strategy for the school's development.
2.Executive; to carry out the governing body's statutory duties.
3.Challenging / supportive; to be a `critical friend' to the school, by challenging and supporting the senior management team and by taking opportunities to show interest in and appreciation of the work of staff and pupils.
4.Sustaining; to maintain the efficiency and effectiveness of the governing body.

Governors are also given specific responsibilities within the school, reporting to the Headteacher where necessary e.g.
- Health and Safety
- Special Educational Needs
- Child Protection
- Information Communication Technology
- Core curriculum - English and Maths
- Science and Humanities
- Arts

Governors liaise with teaching subject leaders and make regular classroom visits as part of their monitoring and evaluation role.

Parent governors are elected by anyone who has custody of a child registered at the school when a vacancy arises. Parent governors are representative parents, but do not only represent parents. The teaching staff of the school elects their staff governor representative and the governing body itself appoints community governors.

All governors have equal responsibility and discharge their responsibility as a body, not individually. Individual governors do not have a special remit to answer queries or deal with worries. Individual governors do have a duty to support the governing body by passing on any matters of concern promptly to the chair of governors, if the person concerned will not/does not want to speak to the Head teacher. The governing body as a whole makes decisions.

Each individual governor is free to vote in accordance with their own views, bearing in mind what is in the best interests of the school and its pupils, however, once a decision has been made, each individual governor has a loyalty to the governing body's decision as a whole, irrespective of whether individual governors have supported it or not.

The role of the school governor can therefore be a time consuming one. However it is a very important and rewarding role and is an opportunity to make a real contribution to the education of your children. If you are interested in becoming a Governor, please contact the Headteacher.

Structure of the Governing Body

There are two committees: The School Improvement Committee and The Resources Committee. Each Committee meets once in the first half of each term. The Full Governing Body meets three times a year at the end of each term and once at the beginning of the school year in September.
